I’m happy to report that our website Bert and Patty is coming alive with some travel action. That’s right but most of the travel action is going to be solo–Bert only. Sad but true. I will be leaving my sweetie for two months for SE Asia. Honestly, I’ve had some serious mixed emotions about this but in the end, I’m ‘just doing it’ like our friends at Nike would say. Dusting off the ol solo travel skills and taking the plunge. Sure beats a summer in Seattle trying to find stuff to do all day until Paul gets home. That’s the beauty of working for the public school system. I think Paul aka Patty will be just fine without me. He will be busy at work by day and studying by night. He, will, however come to Beverly Hills with me for 4 amazing days to stay in a posh hotel to include luxurious spa treatments on my birthday (thank you Ellen Degeneres!) before heading to Ontario to visit his family. Still pinching ourselves about that one.
So, what on earth will I be up to? Drum roll please…I will also be studying the first month. I wìll be taking a Teaching English as a Foreign Language course that starts in Cambodia for two weeks and ends in our beloved Vietnam (HCMC). I hope I will not be a “malo estudiante” as my Spanish teacher used to call me because I was more excited to tell her about my escopades in English than Spanish. And when it came to homework…awe forgettaboutit. I sure did. My goal now is to become certified in TEFL and try my hand at something new. Wish me luck. Afterwards, I am free as a bird to travel around for the next month. First stop will be Malaysia to meet up with my dear college pal, Constance, who is going to take me to Borneo (Kuching) to hang with her family and who knows what but I’m super excited. After about a week or so, I will head to Hanoi. Can’t wait to be back there again. It’s a great city. I also plan to go down to Hoi An to check out the ever so famous Dingo Deli and see some friends we met on our last trip. Then it’s back to Hanoi and maybe a few days in Ninh Binh to check out the gorgeous limestone krasts. I will get back to Seattle with about 5 days to spare before the school year begins. Whew!
I’m also excited to tell you about my new travel gear. This time I have a super small 40L travel pack (20L smaller than my last backpack). Most people I know can’t imagine traveling so light but as I like to say, “If you can’t comfortably carry it, don’t bring it”.
And I am very excited about my travel purse because it’s not only roomie (I could use ìt as a beach bag and/or carry my Samsung tablet) but it locks, it has slots to protect my passport and credit cards from being lasered, and has a cool carabiner so I can hook it on a beach chair. Imagine someone trying to grab my purse off a chair and the whole thing comes along too. It also has hidden metal bits so nobody can slash and grab.
Last but not least (just in case you were wondering), I’m taking a laundry kit, a first aid kit, plugs for my electronics, a hair dying kit (there ARE some things you just can’t leave home without), toiletries (to include sunscreen and deet) and my clothes plus a cube solely dedicated to swim attire. I’m all set for my big adventure.
