My Big Fat Greek Birthday ! !

PINCH ME!! I still can’t believe we are actually in Greece, let alone Mykonos. What a perfect place to celebrate my birthday – in the land of my ancestors. We are staying at Mykonos Camping and yes, there are tents here but hey, how else can we travel for so long, right. Our ‘private double’ was more like a shed you would have in your back yard but instead of it being 100% metal, it had a metal frame and was covered with canvas. Inside was a nice double bed cot and a light but what more do you need, we are in Mykonos for God sakes! The surprising part of it all was the grounds – these are not the campgrounds I know and love, these were amazing; a pool that overlooked the ocean, a bar, a DJ, a grocery store, a restaurant and a self service cafeteria. The infinity pool was surrounded by relaxing lounge chairs and trendy wicker chairs. There was a second level that had beanbag chairs and tables to sit and sip a cocktail while overlooking the gorgeous sea. So, we may be sleeping in a shed but the grounds were like a 5 star hotel.

The first thing we did was hire a motor bike and head to Hora, the main downtown of Mykonos. We were armed with a map and knew exactly where we wanted to be but we couldn’t figure out how to drive there. We drove along the outskirts of the town and still couldn’t figure it out. Finally, we parked our bike and took a little walk and realized Hora is a series of tiny lanes with white walls and multicolored doors and window sills. Absolutely gorgeous! There are jewelry stores, clothes stores (all-white outfits are very trendy here), tavernas and restaurants. We were in heaven just walking around getting lost in the maze narrow streets and walkways.

We found some beautiful windmills overlooking the bay . . .

We drank lovely coffee by the water . . .

We saw a pelican walk into a restaurant and stroll around before being shoo’d away by a waiter

We swam in our pool . . . (that’s right, this was a hostel!)

We ate lots of amazing Greek food . . .

We drove our scooter around to distant parts of the island . . .

and took many, many beautiful photos . . .

We admired the sunsets and moonlit nights on the water . . . this is truly a romantic place!

Our last evening here, we were awoken at around 1 a.m. to a full fledged fireworks display which lasted about 20 minutes. It was gorgeous and we just couldn’t imagine who was putting it on since we were on the other side of the island from Mykonos town (Hora). It was pretty cool though and a nice way to say good-bye to my birthday and the magical island paradise of Mykonos.

Our next stop is Santorini, which we hear is even better so we will let you all know.
