Hello Kitty!

Hello Kitty!

I haven’t even made it to my final destination, Phnom Penh, and so much has happened.  I don’t mean just travel-wise but also Christine-wise.  First, there was saying “goodbye” to my sweet baby.  I know, I’m the one who planned this little getaway but man, I sure didn’t think it would be so hard.  I kind of think at the time of the ticket purchase, I was under the influence of hormones and thank goodness I can’t just cancel everything because I think I might have now that the ol hormones are under control.  Anyways, all that to say, I have an amazing husband who is the biggest supporter of this adventure.  I wish he was by my side experiencing all this with me.  At any rate, I’m trying to tap into that adventurous solo traveller Christine that I knew 10 years ago.

Angkor Wat

While in Cambodia, we made a journey that was typical of most travelers in South East Asia, but by all once in Cambodia. From the capitol, Phnom Penh, we took a bus northwest for six hours to the lovely town of Siem Reap. I like to call it “the Luang Prabang of Cambodia”, but that sounds rather snobby. Really – like Luang Prabang in Laos – is rather cute town and has a heavy French influence in both food and architecture. It has pleasant tree lined boulevards, a small river cuts the town east by west, and everyone is friendly and quick with a smile. It is small, quaint, fun, has great restaurants and is really, really, really (did I mention really?) touristy. Too bad though, because it is a really nice place to be.

Beachside in Cambodia

We’d been in Phnom Penh for almost a week now. There is a lot of history in the city – most of the recent history was tragic – and as interesting as the city was, we were ready to move on to somewhere a bit more relaxed and light hearted. But where to go? When you’re Bert & Patty, only one location will do . . .

Let’s get to a beach . . . and fast!

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

So, we had a bit of adventure getting to Phnom Penh and it was wonderful. Instead of taking the bus, we opted for a two day river boat to Phnom Penh.

Why not! We headed out of Ho Chi Minh City early and had one last drive through the countryside before getting on the boat. We really loved Vietnam–the people were so friendly, the food tasty and the accommodations were amazing and cheap as well, which makes for a backpacker’s paradise. Anyways, we took a minivan to the boat, then took a lovely ride up the Mekong River. There are many houses and villages that line the Mekong, and many people in the water bathing or swimming or washing clothes. It’s just amazing how, when they saw our boat, they smiled and waved like it was the first time they’d seen a boat go by. We love that about Vietnam. Everyone is so friendly.
